CONCERT FROM EXTREMADURA TO THE NEW WORLD – CÁMARA ANTIQVA
Minas de Almadén – Parque Minero| 6 September 2025, 8:00 p.m.
This project seeks to showcase Renaissance music by composers from Extremadura, or connected with the region, through the imaginary journey of a couple: a shepherd named Juan and his wife, as they set off for the New World. Starting in the town of Alburquerque, in the province of Badajoz, Juan embarks on a journey through the Extremaduran dehesas with no set destination. In Montánchez, he finds love and frees a woman from captivity —she becomes his lifelong companion. Together, they make a momentous decision: to travel beyond the Ocean Sea. Crossing the province of Badajoz, they eventually reach Seville, from where they set sail for the New World on a voyage full of adventures. Once in those distant lands, they discover the marvellous fusion of cultures that took place there, expressed through music, though not without the influence of the Christianisation imposed upon those territories. Guided by works from composers of Extremaduran origin, such as Juan Vásquez, Juan de Badajoz (Badajoz), and Hernando Franco, alongside pieces by the great Juan del Encina, Mateo Flecha, and Gaspar Fernández, among others, we are immersed in the musical atmosphere of the time, stirred by emotion and curiosity about the fate of our main characters.
