YUSTE FOUNDATION ORGANISES THE WEBINAR: “GUADALUPE, A JOURNEY BETWEEN EUROPE AND THE EAST” WITHIN THE CYCLE OF MEETINGS “GUADALUPE DESTINO”

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has organised the webinar “Guadalupe, a Journey Between Europe and the East” to be held tomorrow 10 December from 19.30pm within the cycle of meetings “Guadalupe destination” (Guadalupe as a Destiny), which seeks to promote dialogue on governance, science, history and culture.

The seminar will be inaugurated by the former Vice-President of the Regional Government of Extremadura (1989-1993); regional Minister for Culture from 1993 to 1995, under whose charge Guadalupe was declared a World Heritage Site, and former director of Yuste Foundation since its creation until 2013, Antonio Ventura Díaz Díaz. In his keynote address he will deal with the historical, artistic and monumental dimension of the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe, about its Marian worship and the future projection of the place.

The main speech will be given by the Professor of Art History at the University of Extremadura, Pilar Mogollón, who will analyse the projection of the monastery after its declaration as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. In addition, she will refer to the amplifications and modifications that the historical complex has undergone for more than two hundred years, focusing on Mudejar art as the predominant achievements, which has made Guadeloupe an exceptional example of this constructive system resulting from the survival of Hispano-Muslim art in Christian art. Thus, the Marian centre perpetuates the aesthetics of the East in these artistic achievements made on the western side of Europe.

The professor will also tackle the donations made by believers and the artistic companies favoured by the Hieronymites what has meant that the monastery in Extremadura gathers a very important artistic and cultural legacy by having splendid collections of embroidery and fabrics, illustrated books, sculptures, paintings and pieces of goldsmithing done by distinguished artists representing the various European artistic stages.

The cycle of meetings “Guadalupe Destino” is part of the activity plan of the following events of exceptional public interest in Guadalupe: the «25th Anniversary of the Declaration of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO » and the «Holy Year of Guadalupe 2021».
