A CONFERENCE WILL DISSEMINATE THE SERVICE DONE BY LEADING FIGURES FROM EXTREMADURA IN THE NEW WORLD
The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organises the conference, “American Memory. Recovering Leading Figures from Extremadura in the New World” tomorrow, 12 December -in Trujillo (Cáceres)-, in order to enhance the visibility of leading figures from Extremadura who hold some relation with Ibero-America and whose actions has been significant as far as history is concerned, although their service may not be so well known.
The opening of the session will be tomorrow at 10:00 am at the Plenary Room of the City Council of Trujillo (Cáceres), where the Director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno Piñero, and the Mayor of Trujillo, Jose Antonio Redondo Rodríguez, will participate.
The Senior Fellow Emeritus, Eustaquio Sánchez Salor, will give the conference, “El jesuita Diego de Boroa (Trujillo, 1585-Paraguay, 1657). Actuación típica de un provincial jesuita: política y letras”, where he will analyse the life and work of this leading figure from Trujillo, who carried out his pastoral work among the natives of the Jesuit missions till he passed away in Paraguay in 1657.
On the other hand, the History of Art Professor at the University of Extremadura, Rosa Perales Piqueres, will give a speech entitled, “Alonso Álvarez de Pineda. Descubrimientos y primeros mapas de La Florida”, where she will delve into the figure of this sailor, explorer and cartographer from Aldeacentenera (Cáceres), who examined the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to verify that Florida was a Peninsula and not an island. This made Álvarez de Pineda the first European to see the western coastal areas of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas and to draft the first map of North America.
In addition to this, the comic, El relato de Hernando de Bustamante. La odisea de la primera vuelta al mundo, by the illustrator from Extremadura, Roberto Massó, will be presented in this session. This is the 8th volume of the book collection, “Extremeños en Iberoamérica y Europa-Historieta”.
