A member of the European Academy of Yuste, Umberto Eco, passes away

The Italian novelist and semiologist Umberto Eco, also a member of the European Academy of Yuste, passed away yesterday at the age of 84 in his house in Milan. Eco had been a member of the European Academy of Yuste since 1998 when he took possession of the Plato chair during the ceremony of the Carlos V European Award, with the attendance of the Prime Minister of Belgium, Wilfried Martens.

The European Academy of Yuste Foundation has sent a facsimile of the Will of Ferdinand the Catholic to the public libraries of Extremadura, the Royal Academy of Arts and Literature of Extremadura, the historical archives of Cáceres and Badajoz and the archives of the Provincial Councils of Cáceres and Badajoz in order to make it available to their users.

Sofia Corradi, the driving force behind the Erasmus program, elected winner of the 10th Carlos V European Award

The jury of the Tenth Edition of the European Carlos V Award has decide to grant it to the Italian Professor Sofia Corradi known as “Mamma Erasmus” for being the driving force behind ERASMUS the most important international exchange program in Europe. With this award, the jury and the European Academy of Yuste Foundation want to recognize “her career, commitment and great contribution to the process of European integration through the design and implementation of the ERASMUS initiative of the European Union, as well as for her work in favor of academic mobility supporting young European Students as a guarantee of the future of Europe”.
