On February- March 2020, at the Royal Monastery of Yuste

These 5th grade primary school student visits are framed within the project, “The European Union: a long way towards peace and coexistence”, carried out by Yuste Foundation, the City Council of Navalmoral and CEPAIM Foundation. The activity intends to reinforce European integration through the promotion of active citizenship and culture as well as the promotion of debate concerning European construction and the promotion of its values.

During the activities, the possible causes for migrations will be presented and the differences with refugees will be tackled: why they run away or why they come to Europe or any other country, and possible solutions that may improve this situation will be worked on. This project may also serve to delve into the development of skills, abilities and attitudes that may lay the foundations of an intercultural and democratic citizenship that exercises solidarity and participates actively. This project will work on the concept of European values, where Human Rights are part of values, such as equality, freedom and democracy.

The project is divided into several phases. In the first, the students will work on concepts related to European construction along with their teachers with materials supplied by the European Commission. In the second phase, staff from CEPAIM Foundation in Navalmoral de la Mata will work with different dynamics and organise group discussions where several refugees living in the locality will share their personal experience with the students. During the third phase of the project, students will enjoy a guided tour at the Monastery of Yuste and will attend a talk on the origins, construction and European integration as well as the functioning of its institutions. In this manner, they will also know a bit more about the activities carried out by Yuste Foundation.

Each school will make a video with all the gathered information and they will later put them together under the title, “The European Union: a symbol of peace and prosperity of the peoples”. It will then be played at the House of Culture of Navalmoral de la Mata in May and all the classes involved in the project will attend.

Badajoz, February-March 2020

One of the objectives of the European Documentation and Information Centre (CDIEX) in Extremadura, which is part of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, is to provide information and training on European issues. This year an action has been planned in secondary schools for high school students, the final year of ESO and vocational training, which consists of talks on the opportunities offered by the European Union in terms of mobility, work, studies, volunteering…

The talks last one hour and are given by staff from the centre and by Francesco Pio di Martino, a postgraduate student of ERASMUS + who performs his professional internship at our centre, and shares his own personal experience regarding mobility and training within the European Union.

This visit is framed within the project “La Unión Europea: un largo camino hacia la paz y la convivencia” (“The European Union: a long way towards peace and coexistence”), carried out by Yuste Foundation, the City Council of Navalmoral and CEPAIM Foundation. The Foundation collaborated with the City Council of Navalmoral de la Mata in a project on drug prevention for seven years. Since 2017 the project has undergone a shift and now focuses on the Foundation’s main aims, as for instance the reinforcement of European integration through the promotion of the active citizenship, culture, social policy, training and research, as well as the promotion of debate on European construction and the promotion of European values.

Students and teachers visited the Palace of Emperor Charles V in order to see the last retreat of the last emperor; they were told anecdotes of the monarch and some details about the architectural and patrimonial heritage. The students then visited the premises of the Foundation in order to attend the talk given by one of the staff members of the Foundation. The main aim is to teach the children, in broad terms, the origin, history and the construction and integration process of Europe; offer them first-hand information on human rights and behaviour standards extrapolable to each country of the Union and to the rest of the world. The European Union was founded with the desire to end the frequent conflicts between the neighbours that had culminated in the Second World War. The first step towards an economic and political union of the European countries to achieve lasting peace was taken when the European Coal and Steel Community was created.

This visit is framed within the project “The European Union: a History of Values and Human Rights”, which started off last year. Its main aim is to awaken the interest of students to know the meaning of feeling European; to promote respect for human rights, and to get acquainted with the European value and heritage.

Students and teachers visited the Palace of Emperor Charles V in order to see the last retreat of the last emperor; they were told anecdotes of the monarch and some details about the architectural and patrimonial heritage. The students then visited the premises of the Foundation in order to attend the talk given by Miguel Ángel Martín, delegate of European Affairs of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation in Brussels. During the talk, students received information on how important it is to be part of the European Union, the work carried out by European institutions and how decisions taken in Europe may affect the citizens’ everyday life.

The 44 students from Juan Güel School in Talayuela then visited the premises of the Foundation in order to attend the talk given by Juan Carlos Moreno, the Director of the Foundation.
