This book brings together contributions from the Campus Yuste course held at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste from 4 to 6 July 2023.

In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, royal power gave rise to a diverse array of public and private festivities, which, at first glance, might seem like mere entertainment designed to appeal to the senses of spectators. However, these celebrations were far more than simple amusements; they were, above all, an effective means of propaganda and a display of monarchy, shaping the will of both courtiers and the general populace.

In recent years, the history of the formation of the Modern State (15th–17th centuries) has increasingly emphasised the concept of political ritual and, consequently, courtly behaviour. In this edition of the worlds of Charles V, our focus is on analysing the behaviours and attitudes of members of the various courts and courtly societies shaped by the monarchy, expressed through festivities —an everyday occurrence that has often been overlooked or insufficiently examined by historians, despite offering rich insights into ways of thinking and worldviews. This approach also takes into account the contributions of literature and art, which provide valuable perspectives on the courtly worldview, strongly influenced by classicism.

The viceregal courts of the Americas adopted and adapted multiple manifestations of political and festive rituals, including musical theatre, masquerades, and street processions featuring allegorical floats with dancers and musicians, all designed to evoke the presence of the king and reinforce loyalty to the Crown. These events reveal the mindset, behaviours, and organisation of viceregal courtly society. At the same time, this sphere also encompassed a range of games and public spectacles in which the people indulged in joy and collective or individual recreation, with the sole purpose of entertainment.

Los mundos de Carlos V. Humanismo, educación y transmisión del conocimiento en Europa y América collects the texts of the conferences delivered during the summer course, framed within the Campus Yuste, which was held at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste from 6 to 8 July 2022, under the same title. The directors of the course were Rosa María Martínez de Codes, professor of American History at the Complutense University of Madrid, and César Chaparro Gómez, professor of Latin Philology at the University of Extremadura.

In the 16^th century, the humanist movement of the Renaissance left a huge mark on the arts and sciences. The cultural renewal it fostered revolved around the recovery of elements from classical antiquity in all areas of culture: literature, art, thought, attitudes, and behaviours. The objectives of this course aimed to delve into aspects related to education and humanist thought. In particular, the education of the Christian prince and its contextualisation in the general framework of pedagogical humanism; the configuration and development of university education (in Europe and America); and the transmission of technical and scientific knowledge. Some important figures of Christian humanism, their artistic and scientific manifestations, and their relationship with America were also analysed.

The programme unfolded in three interconnected scenarios where pedagogical and artistic humanism shone brightly. Charles V was educated in a Flemish humanist environment that greatly influenced his Christian education and projected itself over the years in the governance of his Empire. At the height of European humanism, the discovery and conquest of America took place, a fundamental historical juncture for the cultural history of America and the educational models that were implemented there. These models originated in Spain and responded to a humanistic renewal of teaching methods that developed in the 16^th century.

Faithful to its yearly commitment, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organised the online course entitled, “Diplomacy in the Worlds of Charles V: Negotiation and Dialogue” from 5 to 9 July 2021 within the framework of the Campus Yuste programme. As on previous occasions, it had the academic hallmark of the University of Extremadura. The purpose of the course was to analyse the beginnings of modern diplomacy at the time of Charles V; this being an aspect of his policy that the emperor gave a personal touch to regarding the relations with his allies, adversaries, the church and the New World, convinced of the need to carry out his objectives, while always seeking peace and negotiation in the face of conflict.

Throughout the course, the various scenarios where negotiation and dialogue played an important role were analysed, both within the empire and in the American and extra-European context. The role played by different actors of the time, including women; the existing powers; the development of geostrategic alliances; the humanist influence on the development of diplomacy; the impact on the New World; relations with the Ottoman Empire, as well as the legacy that that diplomacy has left in future generations to this day, were also highlighted. Topics such as the training of a good diplomat were also discussed in the first insights on the subject; the diplomat, a man of letters and diplomacy and art: the role of diplomats in the creation and dissemination of works of art.

In January 2020, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation along with the University of Extremadura proposed the idea of commemorating the V Centenary of the expedition of the first round the world, in relation to the imperial policy of the emperor, holding a course at the monastery of Yuste, where experts and students were invited to reflect on the meaning of that event. The course was held online from 21 to 25 September 2020.

The original idea was to articulate a cross-cutting discourse linking the fundamental aspects of the development of the Imperium Mundi, which the emperor worked to make operational during his years of government, in three complementary scenarios – the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the South Sea or the Pacific Ocean – where Christianity, understood as a socio-political structure based on Christian principles, was severely questioned.

Hernán Cortés en el siglo XXI. V Centenario de la llegada de Hernán Cortés a México, is the 6th   volume of our book collection “Entre dos mundos: América y Europa desde Extremadura”. It gathers all the conferences and presentations that took place in the cities of Medellín and Trujillo (Extremadura, Spain) on 4, 5 and 6 April 2019 during the international congress that was given the same name. This book delves into historiographic knowledge concerning the figure of Hernán Cortés in the context of the 16th century, and it also attempts to disseminate and make the knowledge on the historical transcendence of the polyhedral personality of Cortés known, according to his origin, youth, education and his colonising, administrative and expeditionary tasks. His concerns as a businessman and as a tireless fighter for the recognition of his legitimate rights are also studied. The objective is to know, understand, contextualise and disseminate the valuable historical, social, cultural and economic legacy that Hernán Cortés left Modernity.

This volume of the collection “Entre dos mundos: América y Europa desde Extremadura” is dedicated to the historical-cultural and iconographic study of the representations of the Virgin of Guadalupe of Extremadura in South America from the 16^th to the 18^th century. The book, coordinated by Professors Rafael López Guzmán and Pilar Mogollón Cano-Cortés, consists of four chapters in which specialists from two American and two Spanish universities have participated. La mujer en la Europa renacentista y en el Nuevo Mundo includes the texts of the speeches given during the summer course under the same title held at the Royal Monastery of Yuste from 17 to 19 July 2019. Rosa María Martínez de Codes, Professor of American History at the Complutense University of Madrid, and César Chaparro Gómez, Professor of Latin Philology at the University of Extremadura, were its directors.

The time of Emperor Charles V is addressed through an integrative approach, emphasising the co-responsibility role of women in the various political, legislative, social, cultural and religious spheres.

The role played by women in the Renaissance Europe of the 16th century and in the New World, as well as their contribution, often in the shadows, in political decision-making and in the good governance of the empire, is analysed. Some of the main objectives worth mentioning are: an analysis of the relations established between women living in the Spanish Hapsburg Court, the way in which they exercised political power and they presented their image, as well as the influence of a spirituality marked by reformist movements common to various religious orders.

The lack of visibility given to women in the indigenous sphere is studied, as is the study of the social model that is taken to the Americas and the intercultural process that is generated in the Indian space, in the creation of myths and cults, privileged communication vehicles in America to publicise the most powerful ideas of the time.

Lastly, unique topics are also dealt with, such as the role of women in the field of both literary and religious culture and special attention is payed to specific areas of marginality (prostitution) and heterodoxy (witchcraft) which women were relegated to.
