The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has organised the 1st Guadalupe in America Sessions “The Jurist from Guadalupe, Lorenzo Lebrón de Quiñones and His Time: The Forging of New Spain in the 16th Century”, along with the University of Extremadura, the Municipality of Guadalupe and the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, which will take place on 4 and 5 April in a mixed format: online and face-to-face in Guadalupe. The Sessions are part of the activities of the event of exceptional public interest known as the Holy Year of Guadalupe 2020-2022. (01/04/2022)

These scientific presentations aim to highlight and give recognition to the jurist from Guadalupe, Lebrón de Quiñones, as a magistrate of the American Audiencia of Nueva Galicia. Lebrón was a prominent servant of the Hispanic monarchy in Indian governance as a visiting judge of the viceroyalty of New Spain and a staunch defender of the American indigenous population.

The figure and work of this Extremaduran character will be contextualised through the presentation of studies and papers by jurists, Americanist historians and specialists, who will expose the historical framework where this judge-oidor got along in New Spain. In addition, with these Sessions the study of the projection and presence of the Puebla de Guadalupe in the American territories during the governmental stage of Spain overseas begins.

The opening of the Sessions will take place on Monday, 4 April, at 11:00 am, at the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe. The opening will be attended by the mayor of Guadalupe, Felipe Sánchez-Barba; the member of the General Council of the Judiciary, Juan Martínez Moya; the director of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno Piñero; the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Seville, Alfonso Castro Sáenz; the Guardian and Custodian of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, friar Guillermo Cerrato; and the historian of Law and co-director of the Sessions, Sixto Sánchez-Lauro.

Other judicial authorities, such as the President of the Superior Court of Justice of Extremadura, María Félix Tena Aragón; the Chief Prosecutor of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, Francisco Javier Montero Juanes; the president of the Provincial High Court of Cáceres, Joaquín González Casso; and the member of the General Council of the Judiciary, José Antonio Ballestero Pascual, will also attend this event.
