1ST SESSIONS “GUADALUPE IN AMERICA”. THE JURIST FROM GUADALUPE, LORENZO LEBRÓN DE QUIÑONES, AND HIS TIME: THE FORGING OF NEW SPAIN IN THE 16TH CENTURY

Guadalupe (Cáceres) on 4 and 5 April 2022.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, the University of Extremadura (UEx), the Municipality of Guadalupe and the Franciscan Community of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe organise the 1st SESSIONS “GUADALUPE IN AMERICA”. The Jurist from Guadalupe, Lorenzo Lebrón de Quiñones, and His Time: The Forging of New Spain in the 16th Century”, which will take place in Guadalupe (Cáceres) on 4 and 5 April 2022.

With these Scientific Sessions, the aim is to gain public recognition and a greater and better ius-historical knowledge of the famous jurist from Guadalupe as a magistrate of the nascent Audiencia de la Nueva Galicia, which belonged to New Spain. Lorenzo Lebrón served the monarchy in Indian governance as a visiting judge of the viceroyalty of New Spain and as a staunch defender of the American indigenous population.

The study of Lebrón de Quiñones’ personality and work is contextualised, in turn, with other studies or papers on New Spain around the historical framework that the Extremaduran jurist lived in. Thus, the event will count with the assistance of Americanist jurists and historians, knowledgeable specialists of Lebrón de Quiñones and his time as well as his institutional scope.

It is with these sessions that the study and analysis of the projection and presence of La Puebla de Guadalupe in the American territories during the governmental stage of Spain overseas begins, including all the aspects where it manifested itself. With an annual frequency, each edition of the Sessions will include a specific topic, which will be scientifically dealt with and situated within its historical environment.
