This year marks the fifth centenary of the arrival in Mexico of the twelve Franciscan friars from the Extremaduran convent of Belvís de Monroy. Known as the Twelve Apostles of Mexico, they were true pioneers in the spread of Christianity in New Spain and staunch advocates for the respect of Native American rights. From a place of poverty and austerity, they brought the Franciscan utopia to the New World, leaving a legacy of humanitarian action that remains a vital guiding principle for human rights policies in Ibero-America.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation (FAEIY) and the Royal Academy of Extremadura of Letters and Arts (RAEX) have combined their efforts to jointly organise an International Congress this coming October, aimed at studying the historical contributions of the Twelve Franciscan Apostles. This Congress merges the 2^nd Conference on Guadalupe in America, established by FAEIY through the School of Guadalupe, and the 13^th Conference on Extremaduran Humanism, which RAEX has been developing periodically.

The aim of this Congress is to revitalise, review, and update the knowledge and historiography of one of the most significant events of Spain’s presence in America. It is crucial to highlight the actions of the Twelve Apostles of Mexico as a paradigm of universal humanism, advocating for equality and human dignity. These Franciscans, who departed from Belvís in 1524, were a unique testimony of respect, service, and protection for indigenous populations against certain abuses or extortions by members of the Spanish community.

With the participation of the most prestigious specialists, this Congress will address various aspects surrounding this Franciscan missionary epic. Through a transversal approach, and by means of presentations, papers, and debates, the Congress will analyse and interpret the impact of the ethical values of the Twelve on evangelisation, inculturation, law, artistic expressions, miscegenation, integration, Indian settlements, as well as on theology and pastoral mission work. RAEX and FAEIY have divided the Congress into two phases: in Guadalupe, to assess the Twelve Apostles and their direct action in New Spain; and in Cáceres-Belvís de Monroy, to highlight the rich legacy they left and transmitted to the Indies and the rest of humanity.

AMOR. NO TE LLAME AMOR: Canciones en el teatro del Siglo de Oro

This first verse of “El caballero de Olmedo”, one of the best known works by Lope de Vega, gives the title to this programme that focuses on the music that accompanied the plays of the Spanish Golden Age; solo songs with a generally profane text whose origin is found in songs or airs performed in coemdies, operas and zarzuelas and which were called tonos. These songs, or tonos, were separated from the original works as they were originally intended, and became part of an independent repertoire within courtly circles, not only Spanish, but also Austrian and French, where this music was very successful. Let us remember that Louis XIV of France was the son and husband of two Spanish women who introduced part of the traditions of the peninsula to the court of the neighbouring country. The musical characteristics of tonos are their simple melodies, of a popular nature, and their great rhythmic complexity, highlighted by the accompaniment of the Spanish guitar.

While, in the rest of Europe, due to Italian influence, the succession of Recitativo and Aria is imposed as the standard form of theatrical music, in Spain the traditional structures of estribillo (refrain) and coplas (stanza) are preserved, although merging experiments between Hispanic and Italian forms were not uncommon.

Our programme Amor, No te llame amor brings a series of tonos together, mainly by Juan Hidalgo (1614-1685), who is considered one of the best composers of this genre and author of the first Spanish opera, “Celos aun del aire matan”, which he wrote with the playwright Calderón de la Barca whom he used to work with since 1657. The programme includes a tune by the former master of the Royal Chapel with Felipe V, Sebastián Durón called “Abril floreçiente”; a tune by Manuel Egüés entitled “¿Quieres estarte quieto, Cupido?”, which is part of the Manojuelo Poético-Musical de Nueva York, a manuscript compilation of poetic-musical pieces of the 17^th and 18^th centuries that is preserved in the library of The Hispanic Society of America; and the beautiful anonymous tune “No hay que decirle el primor”, which was very famous at the time that Cervantes himself names it in “El rufián dichoso”. The programme is completed by three instrumental pieces by renowned composers, such as Antonio Martín y Coll and Diego Ortiz.

With this concert, we hope that the audience will be able to recreate in their minds what an evening in court or an afternoon in open-air comedy theatres that filled the city of Madrid was like.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and the Extremaduran Agency for International Development Cooperation (AEXCID) are organising the project “YOUTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISM”.

The aim of this project is to develop critical thinking in order to foster activism in favour of human rights, which are currently threatened by social, political and economic crises. The recipients are young activists (between the ages of 18 and 30) and representatives of civil society organisations and social or environmental movements mobilised for the defence of human rights. It is also aimed at those people who want to know channels of participation in order to canalise their social demands for the construction of a sustainable, inclusive and supportive future.

The ultimate goal is to create a platform of encounter, support and connection that serves as an engine of change to mobilise public opinion.

The project consists of three phases:

• 1^st Phase: a questionnaire that aims to collect information on the main issues, concerns and demands that mobilise youth. The deadline for receipt is 22 May.

• 3^rd phase: Campus Yuste course “YOUTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISM”, to be held at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste from 18 to 20 July. As a final activity, a three-day course is proposed with the aim of weaving a network of collaboration among all project participants that serves as a loudspeaker to concentrate and reinforce the main demands of young activists.

Year 2026

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation is announcing the 2025/26 Research Prize to Ibero-American Doctoral Theses, with the aim of supporting the development of research projects and encouraging reflection and the exchange of ideas among university students, researchers and professionals on Ibero-American and European topics.

Doctoral theses may be submitted provided they address relations between Spain, Portugal or Europe as a whole and Ibero-America, and vice versa, from a historical, cultural, social, scientific, economic or any other academic perspective. The winning thesis will be published in Yuste Foundation’s book series “Tesis Doctorales”, and the successful candidate will receive a financial award of €3,000.

Guadalupe is not only a physical, beautiful place, but has secularly been the cradle of thought and thinkers, of architects of a different relationship with the New World, an equal to equal one, one without vassals or vassalage, a spark from Guadalupe that lit the flame of an oil lamp, which was so often hesitant and that we now want to stoke. We wish to stir it up as much as we can, because the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has the honourable task of making Guadalupe a physical, academic, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional centre, in the 21^st century, of the relations between Europe and Ibero-America in order to contribute to the promotion of democracy, respect for human rights, the promotion of peace and harmony as well as the integral, harmonious, balanced and sustainable development for all peoples and nations through the promotion of culture, research, the dissemination of knowledge, social integration and the promotion of multilingualism. And this is all from this place, from Guadalupe, which is also so attached to Yuste, a place of European worship. The Yuste-Guadalupe symbiosis will bear generous fruit in the future as it already does at present. Good examples of these have been the “1st Guadeloupean World Heritage Sessions”, which were held on 16 and 17 September 2021 on the occasion of the “Holy Year of Guadalupe 2021-2022”, and were directed by the Professor of the University of Extremadura D. Francisco Javier Pizarro Gómez and sponsored by the Provincial Council of Cáceres, the Provincial Council of Badajoz, the town council of Guadalupe, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Finance of Spain, as well as welcomed by the secular hospitality of the Franciscan Order. What was said in Guadalupe during those two days is reflected in this book, which it will be one of the first tiles of the great mosaic of Guadalupe, a rich, varied and colourful one that we wish to build.

The Puerta de América Foundation and the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation are pleased to invite you to the presentation of the book Carlos V y el mar: el viaje de circunnavegación de Magallanes-Elcano y la era de la especias. This book gathers the contributions made to the Campus Yuste summer course entitled “CHARLES V AND THE SEA: THE MAGELLAN-EL CANO CIRCUMNAVIGATION VOYAGE AND THE SPICE ERA”, held from 21 to 25 September 2020.

The presentation will take place on 5 March 2022 at 12:30 pm at the Bodega Monte de Piedad in Sanlúcar. The event will feature the speeches by Juan Antonio Manzano Pérez, president of the Puerta de América Foundation, and Juan Carlos Moreno Piñero, director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation.

The webinar is organized by the European Documentation Centre in Extremadura, which is part of Yuste Foundation, in collaboration with the European Commission and the University of Extremadura.
