YUSTE FOUNDATION ORGANISES A WEBINAR ON THE CHEMISTS’ IN GUADALUPE AND PLANTS FROM THE NEW WORLD

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation will be organising the webinar “La botica de Guadalupe y las plantas del Nuevo Mundo” (“The Chemists’ in Guadalupe and Plants from the New World”) on Thursday 12 November at 17:30 pm, and it will be led by the President of the Official College of Pharmacists of the Province of Badajoz, Cecilio Venegas Fito.

When commemorating the 25th anniversary of the declaration by UNESCO of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe as a World Heritage Site and the Holy Year of Guadalupe 2021, Yuste Foundation wishes to delve into the meaning of Guadalupe with this webinar, “one of the fundamental pillars of the scientific, social and cultural construction of the building of the Ibero-American Community”, as Cecilio Venegas advances.

The foundation of the Monastery marks the history of Spain since 1389 as well as the history of America later on and it was within its premises that the most important School of Medicine and Surgery of its time was created, becoming a training centre of the greatest importance that also served to disseminate the art of healing, where its influence perpetuated in time in both continents.

In particular, it could be said that Guadalupe inaugurated the concept of the first “Hospital Complex” in Europe. As a fundamental piece of this complex, the apothecary had an outstanding importance, as it included simple and autochthonous compounds and others coming from overseas.

In this context, Venegas Fito will also review the therapies introduced throughout Europe through the route of Guadalupe, which would revolutionise the Renaissance therapeutic arsenal.

Cecilio Venegas Fito, PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Seville, is President of the Official College of Pharmacists in Badajoz; member of the Royal National Academy of Pharmacy and Corresponding Academic of the Ibero-American Academy of Pharmacy.

Among other recognitions, he has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Provincial Board of the Spanish Association against Cancer; with the Silver Holm Oak of the Federation of Rare Diseases of Extremadura; he is an Honorary Member of the Academy of Tastavins del Penedés and is Fundamed-El Global 2011 Award for his Professional Career in the field of Pharmacy.
