Campus Yuste Begins with a Course that Commemorates the 40th Anniversary of Spain’s Accession to the EEC
To mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of Spain’s Treaty of Accession to the European Economic Community, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has organised a course entitled “40 Years Since Spain Joined the European Economic Community”, which will take place from 2 to 4 July at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. The course forms part of the Campus Yuste educational programme, which is affiliated with the 26th edition of the University of Extremadura’s International Summer/Autumn Courses. (1/07/2025)
Spain’s accession to the EEC, which came into effect on 1st January 1986, marked a turning point in the country’s history. It consolidated Spain’s transition to democracy and provided economic, social and political momentum, granting access to European funds and fostering the development of infrastructure, industrial modernisation and the improvement of key sectors such as education and agriculture.
The course programme offers a broad overview of this historic moment. Speakers will explore the trajectory of Spain and Europe from 1986 to the present day, addressing topics such as education, culture, defence, trade unionism and the Common Agricultural Policy.
Among the guest speakers are the Popular Parliamentary Group’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs in the Spanish Congress of Deputies, Carlos Floriano; Spanish ambassador Francisco Javier Elorza; Member of the European Parliament Pilar del Castillo; Cándido Méndez, secretary-general of UGT-E from 1984 to 2016; and Enrique Serbeto, Brussels correspondent for ABC newspaper.
Grant recipients and online participants come from Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico and Nicaragua. In addition, Yuste Foundation has set aside a limited number of places for in-person attendance without a grant. Those interested must send an email to campusyuste@fundacionyuste.org with their personal data and specify the title of the course they wish to attend. Places for this option are limited.
As a third option, Yuste Foundation also offers the possibility of following the courses online. To do so, participants must register via the following form: https://forms.gle/iJuoxzgy9SVAxVsv9
Yuste Foundation will issue a certificate of completion for the latter two options.
This training activity is co-directed by Jaime Rossell, professor of Ecclesiastical Law at the University of Extremadura, and Juan Carlos Moreno, director of Yuste Foundation.
