The church of the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste will host two concerts as part of the Emperor’s Music Concert Series, an initiative that brings the musical heritage associated with Charles V, his era and his historical and cultural legacy to the public. The series is organised by Patrimonio Nacional and the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, with the collaboration of the Cooperation Network of the Routes of Emperor Charles V, the Regional Government of Extremadura, the Provincial Council of Cáceres and the Provincial Council of Badajoz and the European Heritage Label. To commemorate the 500^th anniversary of the marriage of Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, the Amadeus chamber choir, from Puebla de la Calzada, will perform the concert “Él a ella y ella a él” (“He to Her and She to Him”) this Saturday, 19 September, at 12 noon in the church of the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. The programme brings together music, history, theatre and heritage, taking the audience through different moments in the relationship between the two monarchs.

The repertoire draws on part of the musical heritage associated with the Monastery of Yuste itself and the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, highlighting the role played by the Order of Saint Jerome and the cultural and humanistic flourishing that took place at both centres under royal patronage. The programme will feature works by Cristóbal de Morales, Pedro Fernández de Castilleja and Melchor de Montemayor, alongside secular compositions from various historical songbooks, including “Mille regretz”, known as the “The Emperor’s Song”.

The second concert, “Sonidos del Imperio: Músicas en tiempos de Carlos I” (Sounds of the Empire: Music in the Time of Charles I), will take place on Saturday, 26 September at 12 noon and will be performed by Xistras, a Spanish ensemble specialising in medieval and Renaissance music. The programme offers a journey through Spanish and Franco-Flemish music from the time of the emperor’s reign, with a particular focus on the musical memories that may have accompanied him during his final years of retirement at Yuste.

Percussion, recorders, voices and historical string instruments will bring to life dances and Renaissance compositions by Juan del Enzina, Francisco Guerrero and Josquin des Prés.

With these two concerts, the Emperor’s Music Concert Series once again turns the church of the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste into a meeting place for music, history and heritage, bringing audiences both the sounds of Charles V’s era and the cultural legacy associated with the emperor and his surroundings.
