Yuste Foundation Opens an Extraordinary Deadline for the Submission of Nominations for the 14th Edition of the Carlos V European Award

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has opened an extraordinary deadline to submit nominations for the 14th edition of the Carlos V European Award, which people, organisations, projects or initiatives that have contributed to the knowledge of European values and to the building process and integration of the old continent can apply to. The deadline is 15 February 2021.

In view of the exceptional circumstances caused by the health crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020, which persist this year, and with the aim of maintaining the relevance of the Carlos V European Award by ensuring its level of quality and concurrence, Yuste Foundation has decided to open an extraordinary deadline for the submission of nominations for this award so that people or institutions that were not taken into account before the pandemic, but who have acquired sufficient merit during the year 2020 because of the pandemic, may be proposed as nominees.

The official deadline for submitting nominations for this 14th edition was set between 15 January and 15 February 2020, but due to the declaration of the state of alarm the process of selection of the award winner was cancelled as well as the ceremony of delivery of the Carlos V European Award, set on 9 May 2020 at the Royal Monastery of Yuste.

Carlos V European Award

The Carlos V European Award is endowed with 30,000 euros and will be awarded, if sanitary circumstances permit, at an event to be held around 9 May, Europe Day, at the Royal Monastery of Yuste. In addition to the award, ten grants will be awarded for students who are doing their doctoral thesis on a topic proposed by the award winner.

Yuste Foundation awarded the first Carlos V European Award to Jacques Delors in 1995 “taking into account his open and tolerant spirit and his support of a European model of society based on the defence of democratic values and human rights”.
The rest of the winners have been: Wilfried Martens (1998), Felipe González (2000), Mijail Gorbachov (2002), Jorge Sampaio (2004), Helmut Kohl (2006), Simone Veil (2008), Javier Solana (2011), José Manuel Durão Barroso (2014), Sofia Corradi (2016), Marcelino Oreja (2017), Antonio Tajani (2018) and the Cultural Itineraries of the Council of Europe (2019).

CONFERENCE “THE CHALLENGES OF A CHANGE IN TIME”

AN OVERVIEW OF THE CONFERENCE

The conference dealt with the changes in the international juncture and its demands on what to do as well as with national and international policies, and Enrique V. Iglesias has defined the concept of “Pax Americana” as the period after Second World War until present time under the Unites States’ geopolitical hegemony.

This, he assured, has given way to one of humanity’s brightest periods, where an increase in population, a growing life expectancy and an unparalleled democratic and social development at global level has been achieved. He states, however, that there are current forces that are eroding this “Pax Americana” so that it may possibly come to an end and thus lead us to a new time for humanity.

He has pruned down these forces to several factors as the emergence of a new middle class whose expectations are frustrated; the transfer of geopolitical power from West to East; the decline of the United States as a world power in favour of China and the crisis of representative democracy may be.

In order to face this new time of uncertainty, he has stressed the key role of Education, Equality and Politics as a guarantee to progress in a globalised society.

 

Enrique Valentín Iglesias nació en Asturias y tiene nacionalidad uruguaya. Graduado en Economía y Administración por la Universidad de la República de Uruguay, realizó estudios superiores de especialización en Estados Unidos y Francia.

De 1961 a 1965, Iglesias fue director de la Comisión de Inversiones y Desarrollo (CIDE) que preparó el primer Plan Económico y Social para Uruguay. En 1967 fue elegido primer presidente del Banco Central del Uruguay (1967-1968).

Ha sido profesor de Desarrollo Económico y director del Instituto de Economía de la Universidad de la República de Uruguay y ha escrito numerosos artículos, ensayos y libros sobre economía latinoamericana y uruguaya, mercados de capital, financiación externa y multilateralismo.

De 1972 a 1985, fue secretario ejecutivo de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe de las Naciones Unidas (CEPAL) y secretario general de la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Fuentes de Energía Nuevas y Renovables que tuvo lugar en Nairobi (Kenia) en 1981.

Fue designado ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Uruguay (1985-1988) por el nuevo gobierno democrático que surgió después de varios años de dictadura militar en el país, ejerciendo como presidente de la Reunión Ministerial que diera inicio a la Ronda Uruguay del Acuerdo General sobre Aranceles y Comercio (GATT), en Punta del Este (Uruguay) en 1986, negociaciones que llevaron a la creación de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC), sucesora del GATT.

Entre 1988 y 2005 fue presidente del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), el más antiguo y grande entre los bancos regionales de desarrollo. En 2005 fue designado Secretario General Iberoamericano, cargo de nueva creación que desempeñó hasta 2014.

En 2003, el secretario general de las Naciones Unidas, Kofi Annan, le designó como miembro del Grupo de Alto Nivel que publicó el informe “Un mundo más seguro: la responsabilidad que compartimos”, tratando los retos de la paz mundial y la seguridad, así como la reforma de las Naciones Unidas. Iglesias fue también miembro del Grupo de Alto Nivel de Kofi Annan para la Alianza de Civilizaciones.

En la actualidad, dirige la Cátedra de América Latina de la Universidad Pontificia de Comillas-ICADE, preside el Consejo Iberoamericano para la Productividad y la Competitividad y es director de la Revista Pensamiento Iberoamericano.

Enrique Iglesias ha sido investido doctor ‘honoris causa’ por diez universidades de América y Europa, y ha recibido numerosas distinciones y reconocimientos internacionales, entre ellos el Premio Príncipe de Asturias; la Gran Cruz de la Orden de Isabel la Católica o la Legión de Honor de Francia, así como las más altas condecoraciones de los países latinoamericanos.

Erasmus (officially known since 2014 as «Erasmus Plus») is a large-scale programme created in 1987 by the European Union. Until 2017, thanks to the Erasmus programme, five million students have been able to carry out exchanges during one or two semesters of study abroad in four thousand European higher education institutions, with full recognition of credits obtained abroad as a necessary part of obtaining the diploma in their home institutions. The Erasmus Plus programme also provides for the possibility of granting a certain degree of mobility to teachers, professionals, employers and workers. This will be possible thanks to the fact that in the period 2014-2020 the European Union increased by 45% the budget of the programme, which currently has a total of 15 thousand million euros, approximately the equivalent of almost 16 thousand million US dollars. It also aims to extend the programme to non-EU countries. This book reveals some of the secrets of how Erasmus came about even before it was Erasmus, and gives us clues for the programme to continue to expand in the future. One of the dreams that Sofia Corradi, Mamma Erasmus, confessed to us is that she would like the Programme to become a reality in Ibero-America as well.

Si queremos entender mejor el presente en el que vivimos y el futuro que se nos avecina, conviene rememorar el pasado, para no poder alegar desconocimiento ni indiferencia ante fenómenos que es mejor no olvidar. La conmemoración en 2015
del 70º aniversario del final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y del inicio de los procesos de Núremberg, donde las potencias aliadas (Estados Unidos, Unión Soviética, Gran Bretaña y Francia) sometieron a juicio a los principales responsables de los crímenes nazis, es un momento simbólico que suscita reflexiones muy diversas.

La historia nos enseña que las consecuencias de aquellos acontecimientos y de otros acaecidos en los últimos setenta años aún nos atañen. Los procesos de Núremberg nos confirman que la historia la escriben (ante todo) los vencedores, pero
también que las sentencias condenatorias no han logrado impedir nuevos episodios de irracionalidad semejantes que, a escalas distintas y en numerosos momentos y lugares, se han seguido cometiendo en el mundo.

En esta tercera edición del concurso se pretende promocionar la forma de ver Iberoamérica a través del arte fotográfico y dar a conocer a ambas partes del Océano a sus artistas y sus miradas sobre el ámbito cultural que compartimos. La temática de esta edición es “Sombras y Contraluz”.

 

El jurado encargado de seleccionar las obras galardonadas de FotoExtremadura ha estado formado por profesionales de reconocida trayectoria: Ouka Leele, Ceferino López, Juan Santos y Pedro Bolaño.

NERUDA. POETIC MEMORY OF SUS OBJECTS

 

Neruda era un poeta esencialmente visual y que descolgaba sus poemas de los perfiles de las cosas. Asociaba los objetos que guardaba en sus casas a su poesía.
Esta exposición propone un diálogo poético entre la palabra y la imagen: las fotografías de estos objetos van acompañadas de los poemas en los cuales se alude a ellos.

Neruda es uno de los más grandes poetas de nuestra lengua. De esa patria común en la que habita Hispanoamérica. Además de ser un poeta del verbo es un poeta de la imagen. Pero si la riqueza de su poesía y la huella profunda que traza en nuestra cultura es la razón principal por la cual le dedicamos esta exposición.

Desde luego la imagen que reproduce de España, y de Extremadura. El compromiso profundo que asume, en la poesía y en la vida, con la España que él ama. Sin olvidar las sombras de nuestra común historia, enciende muchas luces.

Su obra tiene permanentes referencias a la Península. Además de España en el corazón, en el Canto General, después de hablar de descubridores y conquistadores, de desmanes y matanzas, al finalizar le dedica estos versos.

El firme amor, España, me diste con tus dones.
Vino a mí la ternura que esperaba
y me acompaña la que lleva el beso
más profundo a mi boca.

No pudieron
apartarla de mí las tempestades
ni las distancias agregaron tierra
al espacio de amor que conquistamos.

España es la protagonista de «El pastor perdido» en Las uvas y el viento, de los poemas «Toro» de Cantos ceremoniales, y de tantos otros.

The presence of religion in advanced societies and the rise in religious fundamentalism have raised crucial questions with regard to the relationships between the development of modern societies and the role occupied by religion in them.

Europe is no stranger to these challenges and, in the 21st century, it is facing a further challenge which seemed long forgotten, or at least overcome. The recent and not so recent attacks bearing the hallmarks of religious radicalism, particularly linked to the increasingly powerful and extremist sectors of Islam, the rise in anti-Semitism and a number of movements in different parts of Europe which use religion as an excuse to terrorize the population are attempting to undermine and destroy the values that Europeans have defended since the European Union was born, and this has made us rethink the model of religious and confessional coexistence we live in.

The difference between the experience of the Western countries with regard to what they represent in other parts of the world today and the growing diversity of religious identities existing in Europe highlight the need to review and discuss the role of religion in 21st-century Europe. We will therefore analyse the history of religions in Europe and the different contributions of religion to the recent history of the continent, but at the same time we will reflect on and discuss possible solutions allowing confessional coexistence in Europe as a guarantee of peace, unity, equality and respect.

The working language of the summer courses is Spanish. Interpretation will not be available.

On 12 September 2012, José Manuel Durão Barroso, the President of the European Commission, in a speech to the European Parliament on the state of the European Union, made a call for the creation of a federation of nation-states in Europe, but not as a super-state, but rather as a democratic federation sharing sovereignty so that citizens could exert greater control. In this regard, the need to drive the European process forward has been displayed in the wake of the great economic and institutional crisis and the questioning of political credibility which has plagued Europe since 2007, with a call for its citizens and representative institutions to seek reliable and solid solutions to ensure the process of European construction and integration and dispel the many doubts existing with regard to its viability. In recent years, as a result of the crisis, we have seen the beginnings of the creation of a system of mutual support between the member states and the federalist model is even being suggested as a solution to the separatist and pro-independence tendencies in some regions. It is therefore essential to discuss and analyse these possibilities in order to involve different actors in the process so that they can help us to clarify the way forward for the process of European integration.

This summer course includes workshops for personal and professional training of participants, aiming at enlarging knowledge and capacities in: oratory and negotiation, excellence team building, and communication and social networks to the development of personal image.

The working language of the summer courses is Spanish. Interpretation will not be available.
