This volume brings together the papers presented at the international congress held in Extremadura from 21 to 26 October 2024 to mark the fifth centenary of the arrival in New Spain of the so-called Twelve Apostles of Mexico, Franciscan friars of the Observance from the convent of Belvís de Monroy in Extremadura.

This event, laden with deep symbolic meaning, recalls one of the most significant episodes in the Christianisation of the Americas and in the encounter between two worlds that had until then been unknown to each other. Those friars, trained in the austerity and seraphic poverty of their order, became pioneers of a spiritual, cultural, and human endeavour that would shape the destiny of New Spain. This book offers an up-to-date and critical synthesis of the Franciscan epic in the Americas, with particular attention to the significance of the Twelve as ethical and humanist exemplars. Their legacy, five centuries later, remains profoundly relevant to contemporary reflection on human rights, social justice, and intercultural dialogue.

The volume is organised into four major, complementary thematic chapters that together provide a comprehensive overview of Franciscan activity:

• Historical and historiographical context: The Twelve Apostles of Mexico. This section analyses the Iberian origins of the friars and the reformist process that shaped them in the spirit of the Extremaduran Discalced movement. It situates their mission to New Spain within the broader framework of the Hispanic monarchy and the religious and social tensions of the sixteenth century, and examines the historiographical reception of their achievement.
• Spiritual mission: The Utopia of the Twelve in the New World. It explores the theological and missionary ideals of the Franciscans and their understanding of the Gospel as a message of peace, poverty, and service.
• Intercultural mestizaje: The humanising work of the Twelve. This section delves into the role of the Franciscans as mediators in the process of cultural, social, and artistic mestizaje that shaped New Spanish society. It addresses topics such as the defence of Indigenous peoples, the founding of communities, the establishment of educational networks, and the symbolism of Guadalupe, thereby illustrating the breadth of their humanising mission.
• Franciscan evangelising work in New Spain. The studies gathered in this chapter show how spiritual ideals were translated into concrete institutions: colleges, churches, workshops, visual catechisms, architecture, and music. It highlights the role of the Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco, the Franciscan influence on the arts, and the enduring continuity of their cultural legacy throughout Ibero-America.

Through these four themes, the work offers a renewed perspective on the Franciscan presence in the Americas, interweaving faith, culture, human dignity, and creativity. The studies included, written by distinguished scholars, provide a plural and enriching reading that connects the past with the ethical challenges of the present.

Ultimately, the book stands as a living testament to the dialogue between Extremadura and the Americas; a tribute to the universal values of Franciscan humanism and an invitation to rediscover the cultural and spiritual significance of the Twelve Apostles of Mexico, or, as they are also remembered, the Twelve Apostles of Belvís.

The summer course ‘European Union – Latin America and the Caribbean Relations: new times and renewed commitments’ is the product of the annual collaboration between the EU-LAC Foundation and the Yuste Foundation, the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), the Euroamerican Foundation, the Organisation of Ibero-American States and the University of Extremadura, which on this occasion also counted on the collaboration and participation of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. This course took place on 23, 24 and 25 July 2024 in the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste, Extremadura. The event was supported by the Regional Government of Extremadura, the Provincial Council of Cáceres, the Provincial Council of Badajoz, National Heritage and Mafresa.
This space was organised in reflection after the EU-CELAC Summit of Heads of State and Government that took place in Brussels in June 2023, under the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and in preparation for the next Summit, which will take place in Colombia in 2025. Directed by Jaime Rossell Granados, Professor of State Ecclesiastical Law at the University of Extremadura, and Juan Carlos Moreno Piñero, Director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation. The secretariat and moderation were provided by Miguel Ángel Martín Ramos, European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, and Diego Durán Cruz, coordinator of inter-institutional partnership at the EU-LAC Foundation. The organising committee was headed by Adrián Bonilla, former director of the EU-LAC Foundation, and Ramón Jáuregui Atondo, member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste and president of the Euroamerica Foundation.

The summer course “European Union, Latin America, and the Caribbean Relations in the framework of the presidencies of the EU Council and the EU-CELAC and Ibero-American Summits” is the result of the close co-organisation between Yuste Foundation and the EU-LAC Foundation. It counted with the collaboration of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), Euroamérica Foundation, the University of Extremadura, and the Provincial Councils of Cáceres and Badajoz, along with the sponsorship of MAFRESA. The event, held in a hybrid format, took place on June 27, 28, and 29, 2023, at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste, Extremadura.

The course was organised within the framework of Spain’s presidency of the Council of the European Union and the celebration of the EU-CELAC Summit in July 2023, following an eight-year absence of summits in the bi-regional space. It was directed by Adrián Bonilla, director of the EU-LAC Foundation; Ramón Jáuregui Atondo, member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste and president of Euroamérica Foundation; and María Salvadora Ortiz, member of the board of trustees of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation. The event’s secretariat and its moderation was led  by Lorena Chano Regaña, assistant professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Extremadura; Miguel Ángel Martín Ramos, head of European affairs and delegate in Brussels for the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation; and Diego Durán Cruz, programme coordinator for interinstitutional associations of the EU-LAC Foundation.

EU-LAC Foundation’s objective is to strengthen and promote the bi-regional strategic partnership, improving its visibility and encouraging the active participation of the respective civil societies. Based on this mission, the EU-LAC Foundation was invited by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation to co-organise the Summer Course “The Challenge of Working Together: European Union-Latin America & the Caribbean Relations in the Face of Major Global Challenges”, from 18 to 24 July 2022, at the Monastery of Yuste. The aim of this course was to address the global challenges facing EU-Latin America and the Caribbean relations by contributing to a greater study and improvement of the implementation of strategies that contribute to the construction of peaceful, solidarity and egalitarian societies through education, reflection, debate and transfer of knowledge.

This annual includes articles and interviews that have been published in the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste’s Newsletter during 2022; a time that could have been and was not, the year of the failed turning point after the pandemic, twelve months in which we should have regrouped ourselves to face the future and we did not, the year that was going to be devoted to youth, the moment of history that we will remember as the one of the return of confrontations that should never have taken place.

In spite of this, hope will come if we wait for it by urging it with the reflections included in this book.​
