PORTUGAL, 1974: SOCIETY, CULTURE, AND LITERATURE IN THE CARNATION REVOLUTION

Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. From July 2nd to July 4th, 2024

In 2024, the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal is celebrated, which occurred on 25th April 1974, marking its transition to democracy after several decades of dictatorship under the Estado Novo. This historic moment was not only significant for Portugal but also for Spain, which at that time was still under the dictatorial regime of Franco, who would pass away a year later. The revolution, which took place peacefully, unleashed profound democratic transformations in Portugal that had a considerable impact in various areas, including the political, social, cultural, communicative, and economic spheres, and in its opening to the world, with a citizenship that was eager for freedom. The transition to democracy marked the beginning of great changes and contributed to consolidating progress in a context of expanded borders, with accession to the European Communities in 1986, now the European Union.

This course aims to analyse these transformations from various perspectives, including cultural, literary, and media viewpoints, through the narratives provided by the protagonists of the era.
