REINVENTING EUROPE IN THE FACE OF CURRENT AND FUTURE CHALLENGES
Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. From July 16th to July 18th, 2024
An annual course that is traditionally organised by the Foundation and which deals with the European integration process. The course will take place within the framework of a European electoral year and only two months after the European Parliament elections scheduled for May 2024. The objective of this course is to analyse the major current and future challenges, both European and global, facing the new European government and the strategies and priorities that will define the new political cycle.
The current crisis facing the EU, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the war in the Middle East, and energy or goods and merchandise distribution crises, with unpredictable consequences for the economies of our countries, accompanying these conflicts; climate change; digital transformation and the rapid emergence of Artificial Intelligence; the rise of populism; the growing disenchantment and discontent of citizens; the major electoral cycle of 2024, the largest electoral year in history, in which more than half of the international population will vote in 79 countries, and which in some cases could further escalate social tension or exacerbate geopolitical conflicts with neighbouring countries; the uncertainty that all this provokes, accentuated by the continuous flood of false information and half-truths inundating us and causing us to question any decision, and the risk this poses to our democracies, which may be weakened in confronting the many global challenges we face; are defining a new world and European order in a context of permanent crisis, or “permacrisis” as some already call it, which constantly forces us to reassess our priorities and negotiate with new actors, implying the need to redefine and reinvent the European model, both externally and internally, and to carry out major changes that allow us to provide efficient and innovative responses to the emerging crises, while trying to maintain momentum in defending the European model and its values both internally and externally.
The course aims to create a forum for dialogue, reflection, and debate among academia, political actors, stakeholders, students, professionals, and society, particularly allowing us to define how we can create a more resilient European Union. Specifically, the course aims to generate interest in the integration of the EU as a means to ensure peace, stability, progress, and European values, by analysing the current reality and the role that the EU plays and must or should play.
