This course aims to study and analyse the socio-economic, political, and cultural effects of the thirty years of Spain and Portugal’s integration into the European Union from 1986 to 2016. With this purpose in mind, guided by a series of Spanish and Portuguese experts we will analyse the major changes and adjustments both countries have experienced at every level, as well as changes to their international role and function.
We will cover three thematic areas in particular:
1) Major transformations of Spanish and Portuguese society resulting from joining the European Union.
2) The changing position of Iberian countries on the international stage resulting from joining the European Union.
3) The main aspects of socio-economic and cultural change resulting from Spain and Portugal joining the European Union.
The course will also include two round table discussions covering the impact of European integration on Spain and Portugal from key players from economic (unions and businesses) and cultural (the media) circles.
