The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation launches the 13th Call for Nominations for the Carlos V European Award

The Award Ceremony will take place on 9th May 2019

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has published the call for nominations of the 13th Edition of the Carlos V European Award for which people, organisations, projects or initiatives can compete, and who have contributed to the knowledge of the values of Europe, and the process of construction and integration of the Old Continent.

The new edition of the Carlos V European Award was presented last Wednesday in the city of Mérida, Spain, by the General Manager of Exterior Action, Rosa Balas, and by the Director of the foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno, who announced that the presentation period for candidates will be open until 15th February.

According to the requirements of the call that were published today in the Official Journal of Extremadura (DOE), the award consists of 30,000 euros and will be presented in a formal ceremony that will take place in the Royal Monastery of Yuste on 9th May, coinciding with the celebration of Europe Day, and chaired by His Majesty King Felipe VI, or by a delegated member of the Royal Family.

During the presentation of this new edition, the General Manager of Exterior Action reminded that “we are in a time in which we are gambling the future of the European project” and when the award is handed over, “many citizens” will be deciding their vote for the European Parliament elections that are going to be held on 26th May.

In this sense, the head of Exterior Action mentioned some of the challenges and problems that the European unit faces as a result of the Brexit, the populisms, lack of solidarity, xenophobia and the need for a communal migration policy.

All these challenges that Rosa Balas highlighted require a response and that is why she added that, from Extremadura “we raise our voices to defend the values that identify Europe and which are based on democracy, freedom, solidarity and equality”.

Furthermore, the General Manager pointed out that the Carlos V European Award also includes the mobility grants for European studies for researchers who are preparing their doctoral thesis, and which have benefited more than 100 people up to now who will go on to form part of the Alumni Network of Yuste that is formed to facilitate the exchange of projects and information between the specialist researchers concerning European issues.

The director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno, explained some of the aspects of the call in detail, such as the award procedure and the presentation requisites for the candidates.

In this sense, he pointed out that the award will be given at the proposal of a jury comprised of important public figures in the political, academic, scientific, institutional, social and cultural spheres of Extremadura, Spain and Europe, among which will include previous award winners and members of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste.

With respect to the candidates, they shall be able to be presented by award winners of previous editions, members of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste, Spanish embassies in any part of the world and institutions, public or cultural, scientific, university or socio-economic organisations in EU countries, countries belonging to the European Free Trade Association, or EU candidate and potentially candidate countries.

In the latest edition during 2018, the president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, was awarded the Carlos V Award. Throughout its history, the award has gone to public figures such as Jacques Delors, Wilfred Martens, Felipe González, Mikhail Gorbachev, Jorge Sampaio, Helmut Kohl, Simone Veil, Javier Solana, José Manuel Durão Barroso, Sofia Corradi, and Marcelino Oreja.
