Ramón Jáuregui, becomes new member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste
The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation’s Governing Board has appointed the Member of the European Parliament, Ramón Jáuregui Atondo, new member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste this Monday in Mérida. Jáuregui is also Co-President of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.
Ramón Jáuregui is Member of the European Parliament since 2009 and has held different posts, such as Secretary-General and spokesman of the Spanish socialist delegation in the European Parliament and member of the Conference of Presidents of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs’ Delegation as well as substitute member of the Committee on Civil Liberties and Home Affairs.
At national level, he was Minister of the Presidency (2010-2011), Secretary-General of the PSOE (2008 and 2009), MP for Álava in the Spanish Chamber of Deputies and the PSOE’s spokesman on Social Policy and Employment as well as in the Constitutional Commission (2000-2008).
Jáuregui thus becomes one of the twenty five academicians who make up the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste, which also comprises intellectuals, artists, scientists and politicians, such as the painter, Antonio López; the historian, Paul Preston; politicians, such as Marcelino Oreja or Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra and Federico Mayor Zaragoza; the theologian, Hans Küng; the cardiologist, Valentin Fuster; the sociologist, Alain Tourain; the pianist, Maria João Pires, and the historian and Director of the Spanish Academy of History, Carmen Iglesias as well as the newly appointed Rebeca Grynspan, the Ibero-American General Secretary, who became member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste on 9 May 2018 during the Carlos V European Award solemn ceremony presided over by His Majesty the King, who delivered the medal to her. Grynspan is the first Ibero-American personality to become part of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste.
Ramón Jáuregui’s commitment with the Foundation has been formalised through his constant participation in the different programmes carried out by the entity since its inception.
THE EUROPEAN AND IBERO-AMERICAN ACADEMY OF YUSTE
Is an honorary consultative body, a forum for discussion, analysis, meetings and to reflect on different issues concerning Europe and Ibero-America, its institutions, art, culture, science, literature, economics, politics, fundamental rights and any other subject matter that the Academy deems appropriate.
The members of the Academy are European and Ibero-American personalities of great intellectual or cultural prestige, distinguishing those who have stood out for their work in favour of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation’s goals, fostering the construction of common cultural heritage and progress, and the development of sciences in general with their work. They are thus valued advisors of the Foundation.
13TH CARLOS V AWARD
The Governing Board has, furthermore, approved the call for the 13th edition of the Carlos V European Award, a prize delivered to people, organisations, projects or initiatives that have contributed to the general knowledge and enhancement of Europe’s cultural and historical values or to the unification of the European Union. The award will be delivered on 9 May -Europe Day- by His Majesty the King.
The annual accounts for 2017 of the Foundation have also been approved at the meeting held by the Governing Board.
