SEMINAR ON “PEDRO CIEZA DE LEÓN, PERU’S CONQUEST AND EVENGELISATION”
From the 21st to the 22nd November 2018- JUAN SIMEÓN VIDARTE AUDITORIUM AT LA MERCED CULTURAL CENTRE – LLERENA (BADAJOZ)
In 2018 we commemorate the 5th centenary since the birth of the illustrious Extremaduran Pedro Cieza de León, Prince of the chroniclers of the Indies. His work was prolific in expeditions, foundations, governmental mandates and other activities. He was the author of “Crónicas del Perú” and called “Prince of Chroniclers” by Marcos Jiménez de la Espada.
His extensive work Crónica del Perú (1553) is of paramount importance, not just because it is a description of the Spaniards’ arrival in the Incan Empire, but because it is a pioneering study that narrates the history of pre-Hispanic Peru and of Incan Kings since the beginning, resulting in a colourful portrait of the territory, its inhabitants and its past.
