YUSTE FOUNDATION ORGANISES A CONFERENCE IN ORDER TO DISCUSS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE UKRAINIAN WAR
The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation is organising a conference entitled “Ucrania año uno” on Tuesday 28 March at 19:00 hours, at San José School in Villafranca de los Barros (Badajoz). The conference will be given by the president of the Extremaduran Council of the European Movement (CEXME) and former Member of the European Parliament, Alejandro Cercas Alonso. (25/03/2023)
Cercas states that he will address two main issues at the conference and subsequent colloquium: in the first, he will analyse whether the war in Ukraine has changed the European Union and made it stronger and more resilient; and in the second, he will defend that in order for Europe to be a relevant actor in the future “it must equip itself with a more communal Foreign and Security Policy and institutions that abandon the ambiguities and weaknesses of the past”.
Alejandro Cercas Alonso is the president of the Extremaduran Council of the European Movement (CEXME) and co-director of the Jean Monnet EU-Hope module on European Integration at the University of Extremadura, where he has been a professor since 2015. He is a former Member of the European Parliament. A law graduate, he was a civil servant in the Higher Technical Corps of Social Security and a civil servant in Special Services since 1982. In the political field, he was also a member of the Executive Commission of Juventudes Socialistas (1974-1977); a member of the Federal Committee of PSOE (1979-2000); area secretary of the Executive Committee of PSOE (1984-1996). Member of Congress for Madrid (1982-1989) and Member of Congress for Cáceres (1989-1999). He was also chairman of the Committee on Social Policy and Employment of the Spanish Parliament (1982-1986); spokesman for Social Affairs (1986-1999) and coordinator of the S&D Group in the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs since 2009.
