Campus Yuste Begins Its Activity Analysing the Iberian and Transatlantic Cultural Relations from the Avant-Gardes of the 20th Century

María Kodama, Helga de Alvear, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, Juan Bonila and Gustavo Romano will attend the course.

The international summer/autumn courses included in the Campus Yuste programme of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation will begin on 28 June with one entitled “Iberian and Transatlantic Cultural Dialogues: The Spirit of the Avant-Gardes, a Century Later”. (17/06/2021)

The course will analyse the survival in our days of the spirit of the new aesthetic (and ethics) proposals, which were born in the first decades of the 20th century, sought to redefine the space of art in society, and which we know by the name of “avant-gardes”, from different perspectives and based on different artistic languages (literature, plastic arts, architecture, music…).

Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, proposals such as the Bauhaus or other native Ibero-American spaces are among these currents, without forgetting the main characters of that titanic effort who sought to change the world through a dreamed relationship between art and life.

This course also aims to strengthen relations on linguistic cooperation and the promotion of bilingualism, which are an opportunity for development in cross-border regions such as Extremadura, as well as in the Ibero-American and other geographical areas where Spanish and Portuguese are vehicular languages.

With this activity, which joins the line of work and cooperation around the Iberian cultural dialogues initiated in 2020 between Yuste Foundation and the Office of Cross-Border Initiatives, the intention is also to enhance language and culture as tools for building broader bridges of cooperation, generating new opportunities for intercultural dialogue, mobility and the establishment of international partnerships for sustainable development and the promotion of the most disadvantaged territories threatened by depopulation and lack of opportunities.

This summer training will be carried out virtually from 28 June to 2 July, and will feature the participation, among other speakers, of the writer María Kodama; the filmmaker Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón; the gallery owner Helga de Alvear; the writer and art critic Juan Manuel Bonet; plastic artist Gustavo Romano or writer and journalist Javier Rodríguez Marcos.

The summer course, directed by Professors Antonio Sáez Delgado and José Luis Bernal, from the University of Évora and the University of Extremadura, respectively, is organised by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation together with the Office of Cross-Border Initiatives of the Regional Government of Extremadura, in collaboration with the University of Extremadura, the University of Évora, the Chair of Iberian Studies and the Organization of Ibero-American States based in Lisbon.

Those interested, can enrol either through the University of Extremadura, with the right to an official academic certificate issued by that entity, or freely and free of charge through Yuste Foundation, with the right to receive a diploma certifying the attendance to the course.
